As I begin this exercise I know that whatever country that I have been stranded in, due to a natural disaster, I might not be free to practice part of my family culture. Therefore my first item, represents our faith.
Since there are so many people in my family it is hard to narrow it down to what represents as a whole. Each child brings a different "flair" to the culture. But this first item reflects what our family is about. I would bring a bible. This would represent what we stand for and what fuels our day to day decisions and attitudes. This is our purpose. This is how we relate, or at least try to relate to people, reflecting the values of Christ.
My second item would be a hammer. The reason I chose a tool was that it represents extremely hard workers. My kids have worked in strawberry fields since they were 12. The older ones all have jobs. This hammer might also come in handy as we are stranded.
My third item would be chocolate chip cookies. I have been making the same recipe for my children all of their lives. There are always cookies and if there aren't, they beg me to make some. It is part of who we are and what they know. If there were cookies, they would feel like home. I will make a big batch on Sunday for all week.
If upon arrival they told us that we could only bring one thing and the other things would have to go I would say that we would all chose to keep the Bible. However, my 8 year olds might think differently. It would be hard because the other things are so central to who we are but without them we could survive.
